About settheoryrecords.com

Set Theory Records

Set Theory Records is a small independent label putting out techno and IDM. We started because we kept making records we wanted to hear on a good system at 2am, and there was no reason to wait for anyone else to release them.

This blog is the part of the label that talks. Between releases we write about the tools the music is actually made on: synthesizers, drum machines, the plugins we lean on, and the production choices that decide whether a track lands on the floor or dies in the mix.

What we cover

The posts here come from the same people cutting the records. So the writing tends to be specific rather than broad.

  • Long looks at particular synths, hardware and software, and what they are genuinely good for
  • Plugin notes: the compressors, reverbs and utilities we reach for, and the ones we quietly uninstalled
  • Production breakdowns, from kick weight and swing to how a track is arranged for a long room
  • Occasional label news when a record is close

How we think about it

We are not chasing the newest gear or the biggest names. Techno and IDM have been made on borrowed machines and stubborn workarounds for decades, and most of the sounds we care about came from someone using a box wrong. We try to write in that spirit: honest about what works, uninterested in hype, and always pointed back at the dancefloor.

If you make this kind of music, or you are just curious how it gets built, you are in the right place.
